Update 24/1/08    Watch Video of event

All the years of hard work, the many dollars spent, the disappointments, and even the final days leading up to this years Summernats where both Craig & Cameron spent 3 days straight working through to get TRYHRD up & ready to boom. Even our drive up to Canberra was difficult – it felt like we had come across every obstacle, than still managed to make it. Craig, Cameron, Benjamin and I left the factory in Melbourne at about 4.30am, had a flat tyre on the truck and realized that we had best replace the other 4 rear tyres, so it took us about 11 hours to get to Canberra (just in time to have the car scrutineered). But the officials at the Summernats were very helpful so we were done in about 40 minutes and driving the the Pavillion to relax in our room. Alan, Pat and Lincoln arrived later Friday night, as well as young John from work and a few of his mates. I told Lincoln that with the many challenges leading up to this weekend, someone was making it tough, but the boys soldiered on and once we arrived in Canberra, everything seemed to be working out well – I had a very good vibe.

Well Saturday morning started with tension, nerves and a rush of excitement – this time the car could really prove its worth!!! Although we were facing a challenge – a Holden ute (also tuned by Rob Vickery @ the Horsepower factory) capable of the same horsepower, but I think it had a larger size block. From memory the ute qualified at about 1500.0 HP. Then TRYHRD qualified at 1540.2 H & 1571.9 HP – that eased the verves a bit, but the big moment was going to be on Sunday.

Saturday night we were supposed to do the ‘Super Cruze’, but when we got there to line up, they had shut the gates. So we decided to do a ‘drive by’ on the outside track. Initially in TRYHRD, then we packed it into the truck and did another ‘drive by’ in the truck. It was frightening though. The crowds were young & drunk and anytime they say a ‘sheila’ it was ‘get your top off’. Lincoln & I were in the back seat of the dual cabin truck with our windows and doors locked. At one point I wound down my window to get a few snaps and a group of them came running over to the side and started to bang on the door….. glad to get out of there.

Then came Sunday…….. We delayed getting the car onto the Dyno (Craig was hoping they would put the ute on before us even though it was scheduled to run after us). They pressured us to get moving, so Craig drove it in and they proceeded to the do tie down. Meanwhile there was the TRYHRD fan club, along with the crew from HP Factory, lined up against the fence close to cell # 2 all very nervous while Craig paced around the inside of the fence. The warm up run and all video cameras were on the ready and me with a fish eye lens……. here we go with the first run up, up, up woo hoo 1895.7 HP Craig punched the air with his fist – he had triumphed – proved to all of the critics that his car was capable. The TRYHRD fan club and HP Factory crew were jumping and screaming with disbelief and sheer joy. They only allow about 60 seconds between runs now, so here we go with the second run…… 1817.8 HP – not as exciting as the first, but certainly keeping us happy.

They then set the ute up on cell # 1. I, along with Craig obviously, was very nervous, but it was not necessary. They never managed more than 1700.0 HP and they even went with the option of a 4th run, all to no avail. TRYHRD was a winner again, and with a world record.

There was another car that was considered to be a challenge for TRYHRD, but it was running on methanol. In the final, it got 1900.0 HP but bent a tail shaft…. Bad luck.

We drove home later that day with big, big smiles.

Hope this little story gives you a bit of a visual of the Summernats 21 with the 2007 hp hero -
